How to tow

So you have had a calamity and you can’t fix your bike, it’s tow time. Ebikes develop tremendous torque and are remarkably good at towing. You can watch the video of the image below here.

We recommend that all eBike groups carry a tow rope for just such an eventuality. The length and type will depend a bit on your towing style and what you have available. We like a a 3 meter length. If you are using a tape then a hook or ratchet device can help in attaching the tow tow rope to the bike.

Choose the bike with the most power and tie or attach the rope to the lead bike. We either loop around the bike seat shaft or connect under the seat.

Your towing technique will depend on the skill level of the rider. We like to cycle holding the tow rope in one hand. Twist the rope around the handlebars and then place under your hand. This enables you to be in control and quickly let go should any issues occur i.e. a steep downhill section appears.

Keep the rope tight. Never let the rope trail aimlessly on the ground or near the chain, wheels or gears. Failure to do so can have a catastrophic outcome.

Make sure you clearly communicate with the person being towed. The person being towed doesn’t have the visibility you have so you must provide warning of potential changes in track conditions.
