Electronics

The bike is unresponsive. Panic starts to set in. What do you do?

Some standard fixes:

  • Reboot. It works for computers and sometimes works for ebikes.
  • Change your battery (if you have one). This both reboots your system and may solve for a faulty battery. A battery that is not fully inserted or plugged in is easy to fix.
  • Check wires. Particularly check your controller for any wires that are disconnected or not connected properly. Most wires plug into the various components. Re-plugging these may reset the connections. Broken or loose wires can be visible, although sometimes they can be in a hidden spot.
  • Clean connections. Mud and dirt can get in the most unusual places.

Read your controller. Many we tell you what is going wrong by displaying an error code. If you are cycling a lot it is worth getting to know some of the error codes. You can access codes in the following website links for Shimano, Bosch and Yamaha ebike parts. Some examples of the problems and solutions associated with the of error codes are summarised below.

  • Drive unit temperature higher than normal.
Restrictions: Power assist may be lower than usual. Remedy: Stop using until temperature drops
  • Cannot detect travel speed.
Restrictions: Max power assist speed may be lower than usual. Remedy: Check that speed sensor is properly installed. This is usually a small magnet, check that it is still there.
  • Initialization of torque sensor not completed successfully.
Restrictions: Power assist may be lower than usual. Remedy: With foot off the pedal, press battery power button and turn on power again. Also try ‘twisting’ the pedals, especially if there has been sustained side-on pressure for a while.
